Why the site survey comes before any camera purchase
The single biggest mistake in a CCTV install isn't a bad camera — it's the wrong number of cameras in the wrong places, decided from a floor plan instead of standing in the actual space. We walk the property first: entry and exit points, areas with existing lighting versus areas that will need infrared or additional lighting, sightlines that a pillar or a parked vehicle will block, and which angles a homeowner or shop owner actually cares about versus which ones just look thorough on paper.
That survey turns into a camera count and placement plan with pricing attached, so you're approving a specific coverage plan — not a generic package that happens to include however many cameras a vendor had in stock.
Storage and retention, decided upfront
Footage is only useful if it's still there when you need it, which means storage capacity has to match how long you actually want to retain video — a week for a small shop watching for theft is a very different NVR spec than 30-60 days for a warehouse handling higher-value goods. We size storage to your retention need during the survey, not after you've already discovered a 3-day-old incident isn't on the disk anymore.
