A bilingual SaaS platform that digitizes "Moi" — the customary cash gifts exchanged at South Indian weddings and functions — from a fast entry counter to reciprocal-settlement tracking.

The challenge

Moi has always been tracked on paper — a notebook at the entry counter, filled in by hand as guests arrive with cash or a gift, often in the middle of a noisy, fast-moving function. That notebook is easy to lose, hard to read back, and gives a host no real way to track the other half of the custom: the reciprocal amount owed back to each guest at their own future function, which is often a different figure from what was originally given. Any digital replacement had to be fast enough for a live entry counter, natively bilingual (English and Tamil), and built to run as a real subscription product, not a one-off tool.

Approach

  1. 01Built a Live Entry Counter optimized for speed — contributor name, native place, relationship, and either a cash amount or an in-kind gift, captured in seconds with instant receipt printing
  2. 02Built bilingual Thanglish-to-Tamil transliteration into the name, village, and notes fields, so counter staff type in English and see accurate Tamil script live, with autocomplete from names already entered
  3. 03Built a Guest List with bulk paste-in import, so expected guests are pre-loaded and checked off as they arrive instead of typed from scratch under time pressure
  4. 04Built a Settlement Tracker for the reciprocal side of Moi — what is owed back, to whom, and at which of their functions — tracked separately from the original amount since the customary return is often a different figure
  5. 05Built a multi-tenant SaaS foundation from day one — organizations, pricing plans, and per-feature entitlements (Guest List, Bulk Import, CSV export, Settlement Tracker, and more) all configurable from an admin panel, with Razorpay subscription billing wired in
  6. 06Shipped as three coordinated apps sharing one API — a host-facing web app, a counter-staff mobile app for live entry away from a desk, and an internal admin panel for managing plans, organizations, and payment logs

Outcome

  • Digitizes a paper-ledger tradition without losing what matters about it — every entry keeps name, native place, relationship, and Tamil script, printed as a receipt on the spot
  • Feature access and pricing are entirely configurable from the admin panel, so plans can evolve without a code change or redeploy
  • One shared API keeps the host-facing web app, counter-staff mobile app, and internal admin panel in sync automatically
